Garden Activities: December 17, 2024

So Tuesday was the last time the Tuesday Crew will meet for a workday at CVBG in 2024. We will resume out work days on January 7th 2025.

We (Dale Harshberger, Beverly Kemmerling, Irene Rowland, Nancy Taylor Walker and I) met Steve Davis for our first planting session of the season. Jim Cyr actually got the jump on us having planted some sages and native milkweed in the Butterfly Garden and elsewhere over the past few weeks. Steve planted red flags to indicate where to plant crocosmia bulbs of various colors in the uphill corners of the 2nd 4-corners (S. African Section).

Steve placing the flag adjacent to the chasmanthe. The two are similar in habit, but the chasmanthe blooms in the winter and crocosmia in the summer.

Irene, Dale and Nancy taking tools of the trade up the hill to the planting site:

Beverly preparing a spot for planting 3-4 bulbs in close proximity:

While the group was planting the crocosmia, Steve and I scouted out a location in Native Section to plant a Ceonothus 'snow flurry’ that Dale contributed. After completing the crocosmia bulb planting, the group joined us and helped plant and water in the ceonothus.

Irene, Dale and yours truly around the freshly planted ceonothus:

When done, we called it a day. Bill Dobner was on hand taking care of the compost, and Jim Cyr joined me to check on the brochures and to kibitz about how to prune the sycamore near the old Garden Entrance.

There were several early winter-blooming plants in bloom. Sweet acacia in the Native Section:

A form of society garlic in the Butterfly Garden:

And one of my favorites, Hakea laurina on the uphill side of the path leading from the 1st 4-corners to entrance B of the Nature Trail. It is the small tree bent at a right angle toward the path:

Many thanks to Nancy and Beverly for their images!

On behalf of the entire Tuesday Crew, we wish you a wonderful holiday season. Be sure to spend a bit of it enjoying the garden!   KMM
