Activities for 23 July 2024

Today the Tuesday Crew was a skeleton crew made up of Irene Rowland, Daryl Stutley, Nancy Taylor Walker and me. Monica Barton was on site to distribute garden flyers to boxes throughout the garden (which she does weekly), and Bill Dobner was tending the compost.

The Tuesday Crew opted to work between the service area and the main garden gate as that comprises an area on which we don’t frequently focus. We immediately saw that the angel’s trumpet tree in the Chilean section had some dead on it that we removed. Next was the dead tops of chasmanthe in Lillian’s Meadow which were also removed. See image below of Daryl, Irene and I at that task. Sadly the maytens tree in that area appears to be dead.

We then made our way to the main gate and then up to the Salvia Garden where we spent the remainder of our morning removing mustard and thistle and horehound from the pathway and adjacent area above the new salvia garden. The three images below are of Nancy,

Daryl

and Irene at that task.

I am happy to report that that side of the garden looks great despite the recent hot weather. All the recently planted (within the past couple of years) trees above the redwoods seem to be thriving. The salvia garden, now that it has finished its spring bloom looks ready for a trim.

Along with these activities, I started a list of trees that need attention from our tree maintenance service (currently Salinas). That would include dead trees, dead limbs, and limbs that require pruning for various reasons such as encroaching on a path. Feel free to bring needed tree work to my attention so I can add it to the list.

Thanks to Nancy who provided the majority of images for this update.

Enjoy the garden! KMM
